About Us

Grainbank Mews is a family run establishment offering comfortable and well-appointed guest accommodation.  We have lovingly restored the former coach house attached to our B Listed Georgian House, circa 1820 to provide modern comfortable accommodation for guests to enjoy.  

The renovation began in October 2022 with Grainbank Mews ready and operating as a guest house from early 2024. Our guest accommodation is located in Kirkwall, the main town of the Orkney Islands.

Albert and Aileen invite you to share and enjoy their hospitality at Grainbank Mews.  We have previously built up and ran a successful guest house in Kirkwall for over 10 years and take that knowledge and experience with us. We aim to provide an excellent standard of accommodation for visitors and travellers alike. We are both from the Orkney Islands and have a vast knowledge of the area and can help make the most of your time during your visit. We have 4 children, Annie 13, Ruby 11, Eliza 7 and Bertie 3 who you may meet during your stay.  We have a super friendly Hungarian Vizsla dog called Freyja too, she doesn’t go into the guest house though 😊 For this reason we don’t accept any pets unfortunately. 

All rooms are cleaned to a high standard and have all the required facilities to ensure your stay is enjoyable and comfortable. All rooms are serviced daily if guests stay for more than one night.

Centrally situated, the Guest House is an easy 15-20 minutes walk straight down the road to the town’s shops and restaurants, with the spectacular St Magnus Cathedral only 1 km away. We are located on a variety of bus routes, with the Grainbank Road End bus stop located next to the guest house. Stagecoach services operating from this bus stop include: X1 (Stromness-St Margaret’s Hope), No 6 (Kirkwall-Tingwall), T11 (Summer months only), 8S (Kirkwall-Skara Brae-Ring of Brodgar), 7 (Kirkwall-Birsay via Dounby) & X10 (Late bus to connect from Northlink Aberdeen/Shetland arrivals). Bus Timetables available from Guest House. We have ample off-road parking at the guest house; one space is available per room (larger vehicles can park in the spaces nearest the roadside rather than coming into the main drive).

If your stay is for exploring, relaxing and enjoying what Orkney has to offer, Grainbank Mews is an ideal place to stay, situated with the airport and ferry terminals all within easy commuting distance.

Similarly, if you are visiting on business, we are located in Kirkwall and close to all local amenities.
